To make hundreds, just add the number base before the word cento. Notice that “cento” never changes to a plural form when multiplied!

Directly attach the rest

Unlike English, Italian does not use the word “and”. You smash the hundreds digit right into the tens or units.

cento + dieci = centodieci (110) · duecento + cinquanta = duecentocinquanta (250)

+1 +8

Vowel dropping

When attaching uno (1) or otto (8), drop the ‘o’ at the end of cento.

cento + uno = centuno OR centouno (101) · cento + ottanta = centottanta OR centoottanta (180)

Crucial tip: A single thousand is mille, but when there are multiple thousands, the word switches to the plural form: mila!

Building thousands

Simply write out your starting numbers exactly as you learned them, and instantly attach “mila” directly to the end of it.

quarantatré + mila = quarantatremila (43,000) · ottantuno + mila = ottantunomila (81,000)

Unlike “mille” and “cento”, millions act as individual tracking nouns. This means they require an article (“un”) and stay separate from the rest of the numbers.
